River running (see Recommended Reading) is an option for the Lower John Day and Owyhee Wildernesses. You can do a private trip or utilize one of the many commercial outfitters.
Oregon Guides and Packers (PO. Box 340, Springfield, OR 97477-0340; telephone 800-747-9552; ogpa@ogpa.org ) has a directory of most licensed and bonded outdoor guides. In the Oregon Desert, guiding is mostly limited to running the Deschutes, John Day, and Owyhee Rivers, but other options do exist, including some hunting and fishing trips.
