Most of the public land in the Oregon Desert is managed by the Bureau of Land Management. The BLM has four districts east of the Cascade crest.

The Soda Mountain area is in the Medford District in Jackson County in the Klamath Mountain ecoregion.

National wildlife refuges (Hart Mountain and Malheur) are under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

The John Day Fossil Beds National Monument is under the jurisdiction of the National Park Service.

Portions of the Fremont, Ochoco (and Crooked River National Grassland), Malheur, and Wallowa-Whitman National Forests (all under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Forest Service) are in the Oregon Desert and are included in at least one wilderness proposal.

The Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the National Park Service are in the U.S. Department of the Interior; the U.S. Forest Service is in the U.S. Department of Agriculture (see Appendix A).
