Be careful when crossing a fence (most will be barbed wire). Take your pack off and put it on the other side first. Crawling under is usually best. If you find a sturdy rock jack or post, you can go over on it. You can step through if the wire is loose, especially if someone steps on the lower wire and tugs on the higher one.

Leave gates as you found them. Study how the gate is fastened, so you can put it back exactly as you found it, if for no other reason than it will likely be the easiest. (As you open a gate, watch for livestock lurking in the bushes, just waiting to make their run for freedom.)

USGS 7.5' quad maps only show fences that can be seen from the air.
