24. Mickey Basin and Mickey Butte

Oregon Map Starting Point: New Princeton

Drive 32 miles southeasterly on OR 78. Turn southwesterly on the Andrews– Folly Farm County Road. In approximately 26 miles, but precisely where the road begins a 90-degree turn to the west, head easterly 8.6 miles (past Mickey Hot Spring—see Steens Mountain National Conservation Area) and park at the intersection.

Hike (Mickey Springs quad) into the 4-mile-long depression that is Mickey Basin, exploring any springs, wet areas, and ruins that you fancy (also Coffin Butte quad). To get a workout and some great views, begin your climb of Mickey Butte at the middle of Mickey Basin's western edge. Walk up the lower part of the ridge that leads to the summit. Return as you came.
